Dumortierite was named after the French paleontologist Eugene Dumortier. It occurs in white, brown, black, red and reddish brown varieties, but most often is a beautiful violet, violet-blue or deep blue colour. The violet and blue coloured stones are the most highly sought after varieties. It can be found in Brazil, Ski Lanka, Madagascar, Canada, Poland, France, Namibia and the USA.
